DescriptionA painting of the battleship, HMS PRINCE OF WALES, passing through a convoy in open waters. It depicts an angled view of the gray ship, smoke issuing from the two smokestacks, flying Prime Minister Winston Churchill's insignia and a variety of nautical flags. A series of ships are lined up in the left background. The painting is hand titled in red in the lower left corner: H.M.S PRINCE OF WALES. The artist has initialed the painting, also in red, in the lower right corner: CFM.
Label TextThis painting of the HMS PRINCE OF WALES, and one of the USS AUGUSTA (see MO 1955.57), were purchased from the artist by John Winant while he was U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain in 1944.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill was aboard the HMS PRINCE OF WALES for his historic first meeting with President Franklin Roosevelt in August 1941, a meeting which led to the Atlantic Charter.

Custodial History NotePart of the papers of John Gilbert Winant deposited in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library by his widow, Constance Winant, in 1948 and 1949, and donated to the Library by his son, Rivington Winant, acting on behalf of himself and the other descendants of John G. Winant, in April 2000.
