DescriptionA large hand-embroidered picture featuring various American patriotic symbols. At the center of the picture, on a cream-colored fabric background, is a brown eagle with outspread wings perched on a patriotic stars and stripes shield that rests on the top of the world. Clutched in the eagle’s right talon is an olive branch, while the left talon holds three arrows. The eagle is also holding one end of a banner in its beak, the body of which streams overhead and has the message: “HELP GUIDE THE YOUTH OF AMERICA.” Framing the eagle is a pair of tied-back American flags with a crescent moon floating between them.

The picture is glazed and framed in a 2” gold-painted wood frame.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was deeply troubled by high unemployment rates among America’s youth during the Great Depression. Shortly after taking office in 1933, he personally devised the idea for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a program to put young men aged 17-24 —many from urban areas — to work on conservation projects in healthy rural environments. FDR established the CCC by executive order on April 5, 1933. Within three months of its creation, the Corps had enlisted nearly 250,000 young men. They were assigned to CCC camps around the nation. The CCC program was discontinued in 1942.

This embroidered picture, made by Rose M. Drab of Antigo, Wisconsin, was given by her to a CCC Camp in Richmond, Virginia in March 1938. She expressed the wish that that on or after the fifth anniversary of the CCC, one of the members of the camp present the picture to the “father of the CCC, Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt,” on behalf of all the enrollees of the CCC.
