DescriptionA partially completed watercolor sketch of Winston Churchill in early middle age, almost full face with his body turned partially to the right. He is seated with his right hand in his right pocket. The sketch is signed by artist in the lower left corner: L. BURRELL. It is matted with an inked inner border, glazed, and framed in a 1" gold and gray speckled wood frame.
Label TextWinston Churchill sent FDR this portrait as a gift on May 1, 1944. Roosevelt had earlier given the Prime Minister a portrait of himself that Churchill placed in his bedroom. "Here is a tit for your tat," he wrote the President. "I hope you will . . . . like it as much as I do yours." FDR wrote Churchill on May 20 to thank him for the portrait, which he had hung in his White House bedroom.
