DescriptionA gavel made from natural wood. The gavel is encased in a natural wood and glass display case. Mounted to the top of the case is a silver-colored metal plaque with an inscribed message that reads: "FASHIONED FROM A TREE STANDING / MAJESTICALLY OVER HIS GRAVE / THIS GAVEL COMMEMORATING THE / PATRIOTISM OF PHILLIP FRENEAU / POET OF THE REVOLUTION / AND CHAMPION OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS / IS PRESENTED TO / THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES / FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT / BY MONMOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL / VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF THE UNITED STATES / FRENEAU NEW JERSEY / DECEMBER 12, 1943."
Label TextThis gavel, commemorating Philip Morin Freneau (1752 – 1832), was made by William Joste using wood taken from a mulberry tree standing by Freneau’s grave. The case holding the gavel, created using cedar from Fort Hancock at Sandy Hook, was made by Milton Wright. The silver plate on top of the case was engraved by Raymond Brazo, Thomas Haffer, and John Laetavd. The makers and engravers were all from Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 25, 1943. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
