Chicago Tribune. March 30, 1942, p22: Obituary Notice - Charles I. Nielsen, 62 years old, civil engineer an explorer who blazed the trail for the building of the trans-Andine railway in South American, died today at Jewsey City medical center. Nielsen went to South America early in the century. In the enploy of the Brazillian government he crossed the Andes mountains into Chile, making maps and surveys. He also explored the headwaters of the Amazon river. Later he built two torpedo boats for the Chilean government, the first steel seacraft ever constructed in South America.
