DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the San Francisco and Pacific Grove Highway Post Office. The cachet on the left side of the envelope consists of an adhered sticker with a black and white photo of a natural rock structure with descriptive text: Arch Rock, West Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, Calif. Below the sticker is printed text that reads: SAN FRANCISCO / AND PACIFIC GROVE / HIGHWAY POST OFFICE / Trip No. 1 / San Francisco to Pacific Grove / Trip No. 2 / Pacific Grove to San Francisco / Via Santa Cruz, California / August 4, 1941. To the left of this text is a printed illustration of a partial map of California indicating the various cities along the routes. To the right of the cachet is the original ink signature and stamped title of the San Francisco postmaster: William McCarthy / POSTMASTER / SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF.
The envelope is addressed to (typed): The President, / The White House, / Washington, D. C. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1934 red and blue 16¢ Air Post Special Delivery postage stamp (Scott CE2). The envelope is postmarked San Francisco & Pacific Grove, California, August 4, 1941, Trip 1.
On the reverse, the envelope is postmarked Washington, DC, August 5, 1941. The return address is stamped at the top: POST OFFICE DRAWER 1000 / SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.The envelope is addressed to (typed): The President, / The White House, / Washington, D. After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
