Descriptiona) A stamp cover commemorating the 1941 commissioning of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS INGRAHAM (DD-444). On the left side of the envelope is a blue illustrated cachet with a circular design of a ship’s anchor and chain within which is a heraldic device, a “document” describing the history behind the ship’s name, and the ship’s commissioned date, “July 19 1941.” Encircling the illustrated cachet is the wording “Commissioning • U.S.S. Ingraham • Navy Yard, Charleston, S.C.” The cachet designer’s name is within the drawing: “D. F. Griffin.”

The envelope is addressed to (typed): “The Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt, / President of the United States / Washington, / D. C.” Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1938 bister brown 1½¢ Martha Washington Presidential Issue stamp (Scott 805). The envelope is postmarked U.S. Navy, July 19, 1941.

The sponsor’s return address is typed on the reverse of the envelope: “Navy Yard Development Association / U. S. Navy Yard, S.C.”


b) Enclosed in the envelope is a small printed program for the commissioning ceremonies of the USS INGRAHAM on July 19, 1941.
