DescriptionA legal-sized stamp cover from the U.S. Navy destroyer tender, USS MELVILLE (AD-2). The plain envelope is addressed to (typed): "The President of the United States / The White House / Washington, D.C." The return address is typed in the upper left corner: "U. S. S. MELVILLE / DESTROYERS, BATTLE FORCE / OFFICIAL BUSINESS.” Instead of a postage stamp in the upper right corner is a typed message: "PENALTY FOR PRIVATE USE TO AVOID PAYMENT OF POSTAGE $300." The envelope is postmarked U. S. S. MELVILLE, May 20, 1936.
