DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1941 commissioning of the U.S. Navy battleship, USS NORTH CAROLINA (BB-55). On the left side of the envelope is a blue and red stamped cachet consisting of a small illustration of a Navy battleship with text that reads: “UNITED STATES NAVY / FIRST DAY POSTAL SERVICE / U.S.S. NORTH CAROLINA / 35000 TONS / BB 55 / COMMISSIONED ________ / KEEL LAID OCTOBER 27TH, 1937 / LAUNCHED – JUNE 13TH, 1940 / NAVY YARD / BROOKLY, NEW YORK / R. C. D. 70.”

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): "Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt / The President of the United States / Washington / D.C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope are two U.S. stamps: a 1940 bright blue green 1¢ Statue of Liberty National Defense Issue stamp (Scott 899), and a 1938 deep orange ½¢ Benjamin Franklin stamp (Scott 803). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. NORTH CAROLINA, April 9, 1941 with a "FIRST DAY COVER" cancellation.

The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: "S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA." Also on the reverse is a black ink stamped cachet with the Seal of the United States Navy Department accompanied by text that reads: “U.S.S. North Carolina / COMMISSIONED / APRIL 9, 1941.”
