DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the May 21, 1937 decommissioning of the U.S. Navy gunboat, USS PALOS (PG-16). On the left side of the envelope is a printed, typed, and stamped text-based black cachet that reads: “AFTER 10 DAYS RETURN TO: / GLEN UHL N.M.C. / U. S. S. PALOS / C/O POSTMASTER SAN FRANCISCO CALIF. / RIVER GUNBOAT NO 1 / COMMISSIONED JUNE 24, 1914 / BUILT BY MARE ISLAND NAVY YARD IN SECTIONS; RE-ERECTED BY THE SHANGHAI DOCK & ENGINEERING CO / NAMED FOR THE SEAPORT OF PALOS, SPAIN FROM WHICH COLUMBUS SAILED TO AMERICA / LAST DAY IN COMMISSION MAY 21 1937 / DECOMMISSIONED AT CHUNGKING CHINA.”

The envelope is addressed to (typed): “FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT / WHITE HOUSE / WASHINGTON / D.C.” Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope are three U.S. 1922-1925 deep green 1¢ Benjamin Franklin stamps (Scott 552). The envelope is postmarked U. S. S. PALOS, May 21, 1937 with a "CHUNGKING CHINA" cancellation.
