DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the August 20, 1938 launching of the U.S. Navy submarine, USS SAURY (SS-189). On the left side of the mint green envelope is a rust-colored cachet with an illustration of a Navy submarine being launched from a dry dock into the water. The cachet maker’s name or initials [illegible] and the date “1938” are in the lower right corner of the image. Text above the image reads: “LAUNCHING OF THE U.S. SUBMARINE SAURY AT THE ELECTRIC BOAT COMPANY / GROTON, CONN. AUGUST 20TH 1938.” Encircling the cachet are shell designs, and the image of a saury fish is at the bottom.

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in ink): "Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D.C." There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope are two U.S. stamps: a 1923 carmine 2¢ George Washington postage stamp (Scott 554), and a 1923 deep green 1¢ Benjamin Franklin stamp (Scott 552). The envelope is postmarked Groton, Connecticut, August 22, 1938.
