DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the March 13, 1937 launching of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS SOMERS (DD-381). On the left side of the envelope is a stamped brown ink cachet consisting of an illustration of a champagne bottle with an image of a ship launching on the bottle label. Brown and black text on and over the bottle reads: U. S. NAVY / LAUNCHED / USS Somers.” The envelope also has a border of navy blue and red dots with “U. S. NAVY” in blue at the top center, and “FEDERAL SHIPBUILDING & DRY DOCK CO. / KEARNY, N. J.” at the bottom left.
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): “Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D. C.” Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope are two U.S. stamps: a 1936 green 1¢ John Paul Jones & John Barry Navy Issue stamp (Scott 790), and a U.S. 1925 olive brown ½¢ Nathan Hale stamp (Scott 551). The envelope is postmarked Hudson Terminal Annex, New York, March 15, 1937 with a "BUY U.S. SAVINGS BONDS / ASK YOUR POSTMASTER" cancellation.
The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA.
