DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1941 first day of postal service for the U.S. Navy submarine tender, USS GRIFFIN (AS-13).
The plain, cachet-less envelope is addressed to (handwritten in ink): President Franklin Delano Roosevelt / White House / Washington / D. C. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1940 violet 3¢ Coronado Expedition Issue stamp (Scott 898). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. GRIFFIN, August 25 [1941] with a "FIRST DAY / MAIL" cancellation.
The return address is handwritten in ink on the reverse of the envelope: From Mail Club U.S.S. Griffin.
