DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1934 Presidential Cruise aboard the U.S. Navy cruiser, USS HOUSTON (CL/CA-30). The legal-sized envelope has two similar cachets. On the left side is a silver, black, and brown cachet consisting of an illustration of the eagle from the Great Seal of the United States in the center of a life preserver with the name of the ship “U.S.S. HOUSTON” on it. To the right of this is another identical life preserver, this one in black and green, but with a halftone portrait of FDR in the center. Text below each life preserver reads: PRESIDENT ON CRUISE TO HAWAII / CACHET DIRECTOR. U.S.C.S #145 / -------- Mail Clerk.” The cachet on the right is signed by mail clerk “J C Woodward.” Stamped in green ink below the cachets: UNIVERSAL SHIP CANCELLATION SOCIETY CHAPTER NO. 14.”
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten ink): “The President of the United States / Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / on board / U.S.S. Houston / Cocos Island".” There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1932 carmine rose 2¢ Washington Bicentennial Issue stamp (Scott 707). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. HOUSTON, July 13, 1934 with a "COCOS / ISLAND" cancellation.
