DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the May 20, 1936 crossing of the equator by the U.S. Navy battleship, USS PENNSYLVANIA (BB-38). On the left side of the envelope (and on the reverse) are a series of original ink signatures of participants in the Crossing the Line ceremony, along with the roles they played in the ceremony.
The envelope is addressed to (typed): "Mr. F.D. Roosevelt / President. U.S. / White House. / Washington, D.C." There is no return address. In the upper right corner of the envelope is a preprinted U.S. purple 3¢ George Washington postage stamp (Scott U93). The envelope is postmarked U. S. S. PENNSYLVANIA, May 20, 1936 with a "CROSSING EQUATOR" cancellation.
