Descriptiona) A stamp cover commemorating the 1929 first flight from the DuBois, Pennsylvania airport. On the left side of the white air mail envelope is a stamped purple ink cachet consisting of a circle within which is the American Legion emblem and text that reads: ★ DEDICATION AND FIRST FLIGHT FROM DU BOIS AIRPORT ★ / MONTGOMERY POST No. 17 / AMERICAN LEGION / JULY 18 1929 / DU BOIS, PENNA. Text above and below the illustration reads: FIRST FLIGHT / ROUTE AM 40 / UNITED STATES AIR MAIL / MONTGOMERY, ALA. Below the cachet are the original ink signatures of the pilot and vice commander.

The envelope is addressed to (typed): Hon. F. D. Roosevelt., / Albany, New York,. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1928 carmine and blue 5¢ Air Mail postage stamp (Scott C11). The envelope is postmarked Youngstown, Ohio, July 19, 1929.

b-c) Enclosed in the envelope are a July 15, 1929 letter to Governor Roosevelt with greetings from the DuBois, Pennsylvania B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 349., and a carbon copy of FDR’s August 7, 1929 letter of thanks.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.

After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.

Custodial History NoteLent to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Charles M. Abbott in 1949. It was donated as a bequest of Abbott to the Library in 1952.
