Physical DescriptionAn original black and white cartoon titled at the top, “A Real Fireside Chat.” It depicts three figures seated on the roof of a house labeled “USA” worriedly watching a fire labeled “EUROPE.” The figures are Franklin D. Roosevelt dressed as a fire chief, a fireman identified as “CONGRESS,” and Uncle Sam. FDR is holding a document titled “FOREIGN FIRE INSURANCE POLICY” while fireman “CONGRESS” is pointing a hose marked “NATIONAL DEFENSE” at the fire. The artist’s signature is in the lower right corner: “HUNGERFORD.”
Historical NoteThis cartoon was likely published in 1940 in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette which the artist, Cy Hungerford, worked for at the time.
